Bring your experience with governmental fund accounting to Pierce County Planning and Public Works (PPW), where you will be key to financial management of fixed assets, inventory, cost allocation, reporting, and financial transactions and monitoring. As an accountant working within a large and complex organization, you will have ample opportunities to impact how we do business.
As an experienced accountant in this role, you will apply the fundamentals of accounting on a day to day basis ensuring the financial accuracy of all records. You will apply your discernment and use your keen decision-making skills to properly account for complex financial transactions as well as help manage Accounting Assistants and their daily workflow.

This position is within the PPW Business and Financial Operations Division. Our dynamic team approaches our work with can-do motivation and is committed to accurate, timely, and consistent work. Our team supports the divisions within PPW, while regularly coordinating and interacting with the Pierce County Finance Department. PPW has a wide range of responsibilities in areas such as roads, the sewer system, airports, a ferry system, solid waste, surface water management, planning, building and development, and administration.
HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE ROLE:
We are looking for someone who can take a big picture view to see how financial processes connect
across the department. If you like to dig into details, are comfortable partnering across divisions to work out complicated processes, and can manage multiple activities and deadlines, we want to hear from you. Bring your curiosity about the programs we support and an interest in proposing improvements to procedures and practices.
Given current COVID requirements and directed by the Governor, we need someone who is comfortable working and leading remotely.
Analyze, interpret, verify and reconcile fund charges, financial documents and reports; ensure financial accuracy of all records and make necessary corrections.
Make day-to-day decisions needed to properly account for complex financial transactions.
Supervise and manage assigned staff work assignments, training, development and performance management.
Manage specified financial activity including accounting transactions; reporting period closing processes; and budget development and monitoring.
Communicate with financial and non-financial staff in all PPW divisions; explain and ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures and provide technical assistance.

Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, public administration, business administration, or a closely related field; and,
Two years of progressively responsible governmental accounting and/or auditing experience.
Additional education and experience that clearly indicates the ability to perform the essential functions of the classification may substitute on a year for year basis.
CPA license is preferred.
