Major Function and Purpose
The function and purpose of the position of Accounting Assistant I is to assist customers and provide basic accounting and general office support for the Finance Department to promote the overall efficiency of the City’s accounting, treasury, licensing/permitting, reporting and data processing operations. This position functions as an entry level Accounting Assistant.
The Accounting Assistant I performs routing duties in the Finance department, requiring accurate and timely completion of accounting functions and other office support duties as assigned by supervisor or higher level Accounting Assistants. Individuals assigned to this position have moderate discretion in conducting the day-to-day workflow; however, work will be reviewed by the Finance Director, the Assistant Finance Director, other Accounting Assistants, or by an auditor from an agency not affiliated with the City. The Finance Director or the Assistant Finance Director may assign priorities and specific tasks.
Processes, receipts, and disburses a wide range of City payments through multiple payment options including cash, check, credit card transactions, and other electronic payments and prepares the daily bank deposit
Provides customer service, handling questions and complaints, in person, via telephone or by correspondence
Accomplishes data entry using a computer system and multiple software application programs, including governmental accounting, word processing and spreadsheets
Processes and reconciles various tax payments including gambling and admissions taxes
Completes forms and reconciles various remittances to State Agencies and Kitsap County for taxes and fees collected at the City
Processes utility account forms and work orders
Prepares and maintains basic spreadsheets, graphs or similar material
Processes and prepares various permits and/or license applications, specifically business, taxi, residential/B&B, contractor, animal, and hawkers-peddlers
Assists in processing of business license applications and renewals
Assists in maintenance of general accounting records and files
Assists in managing public records, including scanning documents, and responding to public records requests
Performs related work and special projects as required
Reliable and regular attendance is required.
Other duties as assigned
