Job Title:  Accounting Assistant IV

The Thurston County Auditor’s Office is seeking a professional and reliable Accounting Assistant IV to join its Financial Services Division. This division provides centralized accounting and other financial related services to the county and outside entities.

The Accounting Assistant IV classification is the highest level within the Accounting Assistant series, providing advanced technical accounting support work. Responsibilities can include posting of complex financial data to general ledgers, tracking of cash receipts and cash disbursements, and development and implementation of systems for internal control; performs other accounting tasks within established guidelines.

Primary Duties

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
•Act in the capacity of Lead Worker over other Accounting Assistants within the Accounts Payable section.
•May perform any of the tasks listed in the Accounting Assistant I, II and III classifications.
•Auditing of invoices, warrant processing, ACH processing.
•Performs vendor account maintenance in accordance to County policy as well as IRS and Dept. of Revenue requirements.
•Responsible for 1099 reporting, annual warrant cancellation, reporting unclaimed property, submit quarterly use tax payments and/or any other reporting requirements within the Accounts Payable section.
•Prepares complex financial reports in accordance with federal and state regulations and guidelines, as well as policies and procedures.
•Oversees a county-wide bookkeeping function such as payroll, fixed assets, or accounts payable and assumes responsibility for departmental accounting records and payroll system.
•On an ongoing basis, directs the work of a small group of Accounting Assistant’s in maintenance of complex financial records. Trains, makes work assignments, and checks for accuracy.
•Develops recommendations for procedural or policy changes in the accounting and payroll systems or procedures.
•Audits entries and documents to ensure accuracy, propriety, proper account coding, adequate explanations, and other applicable information in accordance with federal and state regulations.
•Prepares and presents training sessions for County staff in preparing documentation or performing specific accounts payable functions.
•Undertakes independent research projects as assigned and prepares various schedules and reports for financial statements requiring the knowledge of governmental accounting principles.
•Reconciles various ledger accounts to the Auditor’s and Treasurer’s reports.


•High School Diploma or G.E.D. and two years of college level accounting courses.
•Two years of general accounting experience, plus one year of grant accounting experience. Experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
•Ability to utilize a personal computer and related software packages to perform word processing, analysis, information retrieval and tracking.
•Ability to communicate with co-workers as well as the general public.

Desired Skills
Our ideal candidate will possess the following:
•Knowledge of the double-entry bookkeeping and governmental accounting principles and procedures.
•Knowledge of the BARS governmental accounting and reporting systems.
•Typing and 10-key adding machine skills may be required for specified positions.
•Ability to interpret governmental accounting regulations and guidelines.
•Strong interpersonal skills.
•Knowledge and experience with Accounts Payable processes.
