Picture yourself as part of a team dedicated to excellence in public financial services. The City of Mercer Island has recently added a new Finance Analyst position to its Finance Department. The selected candidate will be part of a departmental effort to implement best practices in local government finance, while being mentored and trained by an experienced, successful, and supportive management team, led by Finance Director Matthew Mornick and Deputy Finance Director LaJuan Tuttle.

Primary Duties

This role provides major support to the biennial budget, capital improvement program, City utility operations, and key assistance to other departments. Day-to-day operations as well as long-term projects are integral to this role, with a significant strategic project being the implementation of new financial management software. With the option to work remotely and in-person, the position will serve as an in-house financial consultant to all operating departments on a variety of financial and public policy issues.


What we are looking for:
• Graduation from a 4-year college or university with a degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or Public Administration.
• Knowledge of governmental accounting practices, working knowledge of municipal budgeting, financial forecasting and tools commonly used in municipal finance.
• Knowledge of and ability to use and administer financial management systems and advanced proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite.
• OR any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Qualifications of most competitive candidates:
• Experience in municipal budget preparation, capital budgeting and financial mechanisms, and financial management practices (through paid work experience or paid/unpaid internships).
• The desire to grow professionally and contribute to the success of a small team providing fundamental services vital to the operations of a forward-thinking city government.
• Working knowledge of the Revised Code of Washington relating to Code cities, procurement, budgeting, and public works contracting.
