Primary Duties

About the Position

The Financial Officer/Business Manager serves as a strategic advisor and thought partner in collaboration with the management team for the multiple facets of Baker School District such as Communications, Baker Charter Schools, Baker Technical Institute, Baker Virtual Academy, Baker Early Learning Center, Oregon International School, etc. The Financial Officer/Business Manager stewards the short and long term prudent fiscal operations of the school district, and provides leadership, strategic vision and high-level analysis of the district’s finances. The Financial Officer/Business Manager is responsible for results in terms of effectiveness in planning, policies, and programs, and for the achievement of District goals and objectives. The Financial Officer/Business Manager oversees the activities of the Print Shop and the Food Service program to ensure efficient operation of the school district. The Financial Officer/Business Manager’s work is guided by and must comply with federal and state law, accounting principles, state auditor requirements, operational direction of the Superintendent, policy direction of the school Board, and compliance with state and local regulatory agencies.

Supervisory responsibilities include train, direct and supervise employees performing financial reporting, accounting, billing, collections, payroll, and budgeting duties and others for whom the Financial Officer/Business Manager is responsible.

Education/Licenses Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in business/accounting
• Master’s Degree in Business Administration (preferred)
• Valid Oregon Driver License


Governmental accounting experience preferred and have the ability to perform difficult accounting work requiring independent judgment and initiative; Experience in accounting procedures and budget oversight of school or public/municipal financial operations or equivalent experience in corporate setting; Experience with computerized financial management systems; Knowledge of the principles and practices of effective supervision and personnel management in addition to the experience in supervising staff in accounting operations; Experience in coordinating an internal audit process; Experience in monitoring federal grants and/or special projects; Ability to develop systems that improve work flow and insure accuracy in reporting; Supervisory experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.

Employment Status: Full time – 260 days a year

About the District

Baker School District is made up of four elementary schools, one middle school one high school, and one innovative high school. These schools serve a population of approximately 1700 students. In addition to these schools, Baker School District 5J sponsors two charter schools: Baker Web Academy, and Baker Early College. These two schools offer online education combined with teacher relationships. Baker School District recently launched Baker Technical Institute, a Career and Technical program which partners with regional employers and industry experts to provide an innovative education in hands-on fields.

About the Area

Baker City has a population of just under 10,000 and is located about 300 miles east of Portland, Oregon, and about 120 miles northwest of Boise, Idaho along the historic Oregon Trail. The city was established in 1874, sits at an elevation of 3,471 feet and has an average annual precipitation of 10.63 inches. Historic Baker City is located in Baker County; the Baker School District is the largest of three rural school districts in the County.

Baker County is a base camp for experiencing Eastern Oregon.
