The Thurston County Auditor’s Office is recruiting for an Internal Auditor who is responsible for analyzing and evaluating Thurston County’s systems of fund accounting, financial record keeping, financial reporting, financial management, financial accountability, and internal controls. This position provides highly responsible analytical and systems support to all county departments and offices. The Internal Auditor reports to the Chief Deputy Auditor, and follows a work plan which is approved and administered by the county’s Internal Audit Committee. The Internal Audit Committee includes the County Auditor, County Treasurer, and County Manager.

Primary Duties

The Internal Auditor is an individual contributor tasked with:
•Working independently to complete small and large internal audits and reviews
•Conducting risk assessments
•Completing asset verifications
•Developing and presenting the annual audit plan to the Internal Audit Committee
•Reviewing a variety of departmental policies and procedures
•Acting as a county-wide resource for procurement review and other research
•Assisting with preparing the County for external audits
•Representing the Auditor’s Office before various professional or action committees as assigned


A successful candidate will have accounting and financial auditing experience, be able to build and maintain consultative departmental relationships, and provide recommendations which improve our internal processes.


•Bachelor’s degree with major course work in accounting.
•Three years experience in auditing.


•Experience in a governmental setting, performing accounting and internal functions.
•Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Governmental Auditing Professional (CGAP) and/or Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
•Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS), and various auditing standards including; AICPA and IIA.
•Ability to express ideas and convey complex information effectively in written and oral communications.
